Tekera woke up. She attempted to rise but found something small and warm curled up next to her. Actually it was two small somethings. Her three year old twins had managed to clamber onto her bed during the night. Tekera was loathe to leave them. She wrapped a soft wing around them. Tahu woke up. “Awake…” he burbled sleepily. “Yes you are awake.” Tekera replied.

Present day

Tahu woke up groggily. He shook his head to clear it. A golden face entered his view. “GAH!” He shouted, crawling back across the sand. “Good morning, toa Tahu.” The Rahi Kaita said. Tahu bowed his head in respect to the great monster before rising. A pain in his side brought him down. “I apologize for that, it was either let you drown or grab you from the water.” The Rahi said. Tahu looked at the bandages wrapped around his waist. “Thank my friend. I sadly do not have small enough talons to help heal wounds…merely cause them.”

Tahu turned his head to see an ancient matoran amble across the sand towards him. Silently the matoran stared at Tahu. “Uh…hi.” Tahu mumbled. The bright green matoran smiled up at him. The matoran pointed towards the tree line and tugged on Tahu’s arm. “What?” Tahu grumbled. The matoran looked angry for the briefest of moments. “He cannot speak.” The Rahi Kaita said to Tahu. The matoran pointed to his throat, long scars were traced across it, before looking up at the Rahi Kaita and engaging the monster in a mind conversation. ‘He says he has your sister safe, she is a little ill at the moment. He does not know why.” The Rahi informed Tahu.

Pyroa yawned and stretched her stiff wings; they were covered in sea salt. “Now that demands immediate attention.” She grumbled. Pyroa rolled onto her side to inspect her wing more closely but felt exceedingly queasy. She curled up and sighed. “Okay, maybe later.” A shadow fell across her as her brother entered the hut. “Pyroa, you okay?” He whispered. Pyroa looked up. “Little sick, probably because I swallowed enough sea water to drown a kane-ra.” she replied. Tahu grinned. The “illness” was nothing to get worked up about. Pyroa rose and she and her brother walked from the hut.

The matoran stood there waiting for them. “We can’t thank you enough.” Tahu said to the matoran. Taking a stick he wrote into the sand. “No do not mention it, toa. It was the least I could do. You may call me Kalu. I apologise for having to communicate in this manner.”  Pyroa looked at Kalu before saying, “Why do you apologise? It isn’t a problem.” Kalu mocked wiping his hand across his forehead.  Tahu laughed. Kalu grinned at them.

Tahu and Pyroa gathered their boat. Most of the hull was intact but the mast was finally obliterated. Pyroa doubled up and vomited as she dragged the keel out of the reaching waves. Tahu ran over to her. “You okay?” He asked, panicked. “Yeah, fine, too much sea water.” Pyroa replied. Her brother seemed appeased by this answer and helped her drag the keel over to the rest of the boat.

Later that evening the Rahi Kaita joined them on shore. The magnificent monster could barely get half his body on the shore without risking destroying the almost repaired boat. The great purple black head lay locked in a mind conversation with Pyroa and Kalu as they stared at the stars. The main, golden head spoke with Tahu. “Greetings once more my friend.” He said. Tahu bowed before replying, “We seem to keep bumping into you.” The Rahi grinned, baring row upon row of fangs. “I have taken an interest in your quest. Seeing as you are traveling on a route close to my own.”

“So, you were once Mata Nui’s pet eh?”

“No, merely his wife’s. Helryx was her name, the first toa; I have been searching for her for centuries.”

“I thought she was dead.” Tahu replied.

The Rahi Kaita shook his head. “No. She is alive, so I have heard, as well as her daughter, my second master.”  Tahu glanced up at the Rahi. “A daughter?” He sputtered. The Kaita dipped his head. “Yes, I miss her more than Helryx.” Tahu looked down. “How come? I would think you would miss Helryx more.” Kaita shook his head. “Helryx was thrown into war and grief much too fast. I loved her daughter for her innocence and even when she fought for the first time she retained that air about her. Nothing could penetrate it.”

They sat in silence for a moment before Tahu asked, “How did Kalu end up here?” “Ship wreck and he ran a foul of a school of protodrake which is why he can no longer speak.”

“I thought protodrake were peaceful?”

“They are unless you anger them.”

Once more it was silent. Suddenly the head of shadow cried out in pain and sorrow. Tahu felt shivers go up his spine as the head continued to mourn. Pyroa tried her hardest to comfort the creature as it cried. “He won’t tell me what’s wrong!” Pyroa exclaimed. The purple black head of kaita whipped about to look at Tahu.

The image in his head was contorted in pain and sadness. Tahu got a brief flash of blood and death. The images were fuzzy but they jolted his mind and sent him reeling. He fell to the ground and blacked out.

“Tahu, Tahu…TAHU! For Mata Nui’s sake…wake up!” Tahu felt water splash onto his face as his sister none to gently woke him up. “I hate blacking out.” Tahu mumbled as he sat up, shaking water from himself. Kaita’s shadow head came into view. “I apologize.” It said its voice a mere whisper in his brain. “My gift of foresight is quite painful, even to me. I am sorry the vision got projected to you.” Tahu stood up. “Apology accepted.” He mumbled. The head looked up towards the sky. He must’ve forgotten to break the mind link for Tahu could see past memories in Kaita’s mind.

A bright blue toa leaned against the side of the golden head. A smaller, younger toa stood there holding her hand. Tahu guessed the older toa was Helryx. The younger one however looked oddly familiar…the images switched. Now the Kaita was thinking about Tahu and his sister. “If she isn’t careful she will lose…” The Kaita began thinking when Tahu said, “Her mind? If you are talking about her mind she lost that a long time ago!” Kaita looked at him stunned. “My apologies, Tahu Akamai. I did not break mind link.”

Pyroa looked worriedly at her brother. “Go to your sister, she seems troubled.” Kaita urged.  Tahu looked once more at the rahi as it raised one of its many heads to the sky. He had a rough idea of what the great beast might’ve been thinking of. “You okay Tahu?” Pyroa asked worriedly. Tahu nodded slowly, still staring at the Kaita.

Tekera watched her children as they ran as fast as their little legs would carry them over to Axonn. She smiled as Axonn gently picked them up. They could both fit in the palms of his massive hands. Very soon they would be old enough to join the other young matoran whom he taught.

Tekera’s hand unconsciously curled into a fist. For the first two years of their life they had struggled to exist. Very often their hearts would come close to stopping or they would not be able to breathe. She had fought to drag them out of Shadow and to the Shadow they would not return to. “This I promise,” She thought to herself, “You won’t walk the Dark Road till your time has truly come.”
Okay I decided for the flash back part lets speed it up a few years k? So the flash backs occur roughly three years after Pyroa and Tahu are born.

Very impressive! =D Hmm... I wonder who Helryx's daughter might be? If Tahu recognizes her a bit... Is it a chance I know her as well? There was just one part that confused me, but it's nothing serious. All in all. This was excellent. =D
